Creating Southwest Imagery in Pencil and Ink Wash
“My art portrays the energy and purity of life in the American Southwest. I'm intrigued by the Native American Culture and Spirit Animals. I strive to show a sense of honor, respect, and compassion. Whether I’m sketching at their Powwows, or in the field, I cannot help but reflect on where they've been, where they're going, and feel the essence of their spirit, passion, and heart. I love to portray details that reach into their souls, the very essence of their spirit being.
The hues and tints of my work are inspired by the stunning colors of the Arizona sunsets and sunrises in the desert. I love seeing everything that interacts with the day’s light and the patterns nature plays on shadows and coloring.
In my work, I seek to capture a moment when I feel I have reached an understanding of their thoughts and being and transfer that essence onto paper.”
ARTISTIC PROFILE
Growing up in Arizona and during her childhood, Lynn Sakellar-Gekas, lived at La Posta Quemada Ranch, a working cattle ranch behind Colossal Cave and Agua Caliente Ranch, sparking her interest in wildlife and Native American Culture. She attended the University of Arizona, University of Guadalajara, Mexico, and Santa Barbara Art Institute on scholarships, Art History/Studio Art Majors, studying bronze casting, glassblowing, and clay. She is active in various art associations showing her works at festivals, fairs, galleries and art shows around Arizona.
